Small-town living does not mean small adventures!

Small-Town Living With Big Outdoor Adventures

There is something truly special about life in Southwest Virginia. Here, you can enjoy the comfort of a close-knit community, recognize familiar faces around town and still be only a short drive from mountains, rivers, trails and unforgettable views.

You do not have to choose between peaceful small-town living and an active lifestyle. In our corner of Virginia, they naturally go together.

A Slower Pace Without Giving Up Adventure

Small-town living offers many of the things people are searching for today: less congestion, more breathing room and a stronger sense of community.

Yet living in Southwest Virginia does not mean staying home with nothing to do. The region includes 11 state parks, thousands of acres of public land and opportunities for hiking, biking, kayaking, camping and much more.

An ordinary Saturday can quickly become a scenic drive, a family hike, an afternoon on the water or a peaceful picnic surrounded by mountain views.

Explore the Virginia Creeper Trail

One of our region’s most recognized outdoor destinations is the Virginia Creeper Trail.

The 34.3-mile rail-to-recreation trail travels through Abingdon and Damascus before continuing toward the Mount Rogers area. It welcomes cyclists, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts while offering beautiful scenery and a fascinating connection to the region’s railroad history.

Families can choose a relaxed outing, while more adventurous visitors can plan a longer ride. Bike rentals and shuttle services in Abingdon and Damascus also make the trail accessible for visitors who do not own equipment.

Hike Among Virginia’s Highest Peaks

The Mount Rogers National Recreation Area provides an incredible variety of outdoor experiences across Southwest Virginia.

The area includes approximately 400 miles of trails, four wilderness areas, 11 campgrounds and sections of both the Appalachian Trail and Virginia Creeper Trail. Visitors can hike, camp, fish, ride horses, watch wildlife or simply enjoy a scenic mountain drive.

Nearby Grayson Highlands State Park is especially well known for its high-country scenery and free-ranging ponies. Even those who are not experienced hikers can find shorter trails and accessible ways to experience the beauty of the area.

Take in the Views at Breaks Interstate Park

For dramatic scenery, Breaks Interstate Park offers overlooks, trails and views across a deep Appalachian gorge.

It is a wonderful destination for hiking, photography, picnicking or simply slowing down long enough to appreciate the landscape. Some trails are short enough for a casual outing, while others offer a more challenging adventure.

It is the type of place that reminds us how fortunate we are to live near so much natural beauty.

Spend a Day on the Water

Southwest Virginia’s rivers, lakes and streams offer opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and swimming.

Clinch River State Park provides river access, hiking trails and more than two miles of river frontage within its Sugar Hill Unit.

Around Damascus, Whitetop Laurel Creek is popular for trout fishing and seasonal paddling, while other waterways throughout the region provide peaceful places to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Discover Adventures Close to Home

Not every outdoor experience has to involve an all-day trip.

Local parks, walking trails, fishing spots and scenic back roads make it easy to spend more time outside without extensive planning. In Norton, for example, Flag Rock Recreation Area offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, paddling and climbing, along with access to impressive views from the High Knob area.

Sometimes the best adventures are the simple ones: an evening walk, a quiet morning by the river or a drive through the mountains as the seasons begin to change.

A Wonderful Place to Put Down Roots

For many people, quality of life is about more than the house itself. It is also about what surrounds it.

Southwest Virginia offers room to breathe, welcoming communities and countless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. You can own a home in a peaceful neighborhood, live near family and still have an entirely new adventure waiting just beyond your front door.

That balance is one of the many reasons we are proud to call this region home.

At Uptown Properties, we do more than help people buy and sell houses. We help them discover communities, lifestyles and places where they can truly feel at home.
