Planning to Visit an Open House This Weekend?
Make your weekend Open House Plan!

Open houses are a great way to explore homes, learn what you like, and get a feel for different neighborhoods. But before you walk through that door, there is one important thing to remember:
If you are already working with a real estate agent, take your agent with you—or immediately tell the agent hosting the open house that you already have one.
The agent greeting you at the door is typically representing the seller or hosting on behalf of the listing brokerage. They may ask you to sign in, whether you are working with an agent, or whether you have signed a buyer agreement. Be honest and provide your agent’s name.
Why does this matter?
Your agent has likely spent time helping you prepare, arranging showings, answering questions, researching properties, and protecting your interests. Clearly disclosing that relationship helps prevent confusion about representation and communication later.
Before attending an open house:
- Let your agent know which property you want to see.
- Ask whether your agent can attend with you.
- If your agent cannot go, ask how they would like you to proceed.
- Tell the hosting agent right away that you are represented.
- Sign in using accurate information and include your agent’s name.
- Avoid discussing your budget, urgency, motivation, or negotiating strategy with someone representing the seller.
- Contact your own agent if you are interested in scheduling another showing or writing an offer.
Having an agent does not mean you cannot enjoy visiting an open house! It simply means you should be transparent and keep your agent informed.
And if you are not currently working with an agent, an open house can be a wonderful opportunity to ask questions and meet local real estate professionals. Just be sure you understand who each agent represents before sharing personal or financial details.
