Memorial Day: Remembering, Reflecting, and Appreciating Home

Sandie Rhymer • May 24, 2026

With gratitude, we remember

Memorial Day weekend often marks the unofficial start of summer. For many families, it means cookouts, lake days, road trips, neighborhood gatherings, and a little extra time to enjoy the place we call home.

But at its heart, Memorial Day is much more than a long weekend.

It is a time to pause and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice protects the freedoms, communities, homes, and everyday moments we are blessed to enjoy.

At Uptown Properties, we spend a lot of time talking about home. We help people buy homes, sell homes, invest in property, relocate to new communities, and make important life transitions. But Memorial Day reminds us that “home” is more than walls, porches, kitchens, and closing papers.

Home is safety.

Home is family.

Home is community.

Home is the freedom to build a life, put down roots, raise children, gather around a table, wave to neighbors, and create memories in the places we love.

Here in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee, we are surrounded by communities that understand the value of service, sacrifice, and tradition.

Many of our families have deep military ties. Many of our neighborhoods include veterans, active-duty service members, military spouses, parents, children, and loved ones who know personally what service to country means.

That is why Memorial Day deserves more than just a passing mention.

As we enjoy the weekend, may we also take time to remember those who did not come home. May we honor their families. May we teach our children why this day matters. And may we carry gratitude with us — not just on Memorial Day, but throughout the year.

Whether you are spending the weekend with family, visiting a local event, placing flowers, flying the flag, or simply enjoying a quiet moment on the porch, we hope you find time to reflect on the meaning behind the day.

From all of us at Uptown Properties, we wish you a peaceful and meaningful Memorial Day.

With gratitude, we remember.
